This has to be

One of the hottest summers

We have had in a long time

 

Believe me

I love the beach….

 

So I’m not complaining

 

As of this past weekend

We have had…

3 prolonged heat waves

 

I recently saw a posting

 

July….

Was the hottest July

Since they began keeping records

 

I am sure we’ll see

That August

Will also be in the running

 

The heat has been brutal for my garden

 

Only a few cherry tomatoes

No regular tomatoes

And not 1 pepper

 

Normally, I am giving away

Tons of tomatoes and peppers

 

This year….

I can’t even trim a salad

 

For those battling this heat

There is good news

 

The heat will be ending

 

I walked to my kitchen window

At the shore this weekend

 

And….

 

Saw a string of birds

Starting to line up

On the telephone line

Across the street.

 

Each year

This has been a tell-tale sign

That the weather is changing…

 

And fall is on the way.

 

How do they know?

 

Just like clockwork

The temperatures

Will start to cool down.

 

My wife, Janet

Was the first to notice this phenomena…

A couple of years ago

 

Apparently….

 She spends more time

 At the kitchen sink

 Than I do

 

The birds must be in tune

With the weather

 

And they have never

Been wrong

 

It is sad

That summer is coming to an end

 

We find ourselves

Talking about it

Thru out the year

 

And then….

Puff….

 

Another one slides by

The deregulated energy market is causing a big buzz in this area. In the spring of 2010, NJ opened up deregulated opportunities to the residential market.

In January 2011, PA opened up the Peco territory to deregulation after a 5 year moratorium.

As the result, the market has been flooded with companies and individuals trying to capitalize on these opportunities.

Online Auction opportunities are now available. All you have to do is type buying deregulated energy online into your Google page and you will have multiple selections.

Also many companies have been promoting a Multi-level marketing approach to set up a grass roots effort in hopes of gaining penetration in the market.

.

As more consumers have grown more comfortable with on line purchasing, it seemed natural that this avenue would be an effective marketing option.

The only problem we see is that when buying energy in the deregulated market, you are dealing with a commodity. This puts a whole new spin on the opportunity.

This week, we would like to take a look at on line auctions.

Below is a plus-minus list we have developed to help you make an objective decision about purchasing energy on line versus using an independent broker.

On Line Auctions:

Plus

  • Feel like you are getting a good deal by participating in an ecommerce transaction
  • Potentially lower price by doing the ecommerce transaction 
  • Potentially easier transaction since there is limited contact with 3rd party energy suppliers
  • Electricity is a commodity and customer’s management feels this is best process for doing transaction

 

Minus

  • Can be more challenging to negotiate terms & conditions  
  • Potentially less leverage with suppliers since there is no personal interaction
  • Difficult determining what factors are included in the price.
    •  Is it fully loaded? (contains 7% loss transmission and sales tax)
    •  Is it a fixed rate or variable rate?
  • How do you know when is the best time to buy
  • Online auctioneers are brokers approaching the same providers we would be using.
  • Many on line auction companies do not have any information on their website regarding the management of the company

PSEG Summer Rates

Basic Generations Service (BGS) rates for PSEG electric customers have been established for the new year.  BGS rates are the default rate for customers serviced by the utility PSEG who have not shopped for a competitive electricity supplier.  The new rates will go into effect on June 1.

PSEG default rates for the supply portion of the bill are divided into a summer term that begins June 1 and extends through the end of September, and the non summer term that begins October 1 and extends through the end of May 2011.  The default BGS rates include the entire Supply section on customer PSEG bills.  This is often an area of confusion to business customers who look into the benefits of competitive rate shopping.  The total price to compare takes into account the generation rate as well as capacity charges.  When customers just compare the per KWh rate on their current bill they are not getting an apples-to-apples comparison. 

In order to realize the actual price to compare, PSEG business customers should take their total supply charge and divide it by the total amount of KWh they consumed for the bill period.  This will result in a KWh rate that can be compared to offers from competitive suppliers.  This price to compare will include state taxes of 7%.  So if the competive rate does not include taxes (as will be stated on the contract) multiply the rate by 1.07 to get the true comparison rate.

The bottom line is that there are competitive electricity suppliers available for business customers serviced by PSEG.  Depending on the size of the customer and the type of electricity product chosen (fixed, variable, green energy, long term), savings can be as much as 25%.

Our Perspective:

They bring up a great point, know what you are paying with PSEG and if you are shopping your account, ask if the price is fully loaded.

The price presented from any deregulated provider must include the base price, plus 7% loss allowance(to deliver 100kw of electric, you must send 107kw, for there is a 7% loss in the transmission), plus 7% sales tax. This is an apples to apples comparison.
